Melissa's Musings
During our lunchtime chat yesterday at Folklore Village we were discussing the weather (what else?!). Well, more specifically, we were discussing the cold and the wind, but were highlighting the beautiful patterns the wind makes in the snow and the other cool things that winter weather can do. (No pun intended.) I mentioned that when I was little my dad and I took a mug of boiling water outside in the bitter cold and threw it into the air and it turned into an instant powder! It was such a fascinating thing that I remember it vividly 20+ years later. So yep, we got up, put water on to boil and then took it outside to the back porch and threw it into the air -- poof! Instant white powder!
I don't understand how this phenomenon works, but then again, I think that's part of its charm. Kind of like Folklore Village. There's a warmth and comfort found here among people that just happens. I don't know how it works either, I just know it still intrigues me and I've been here five and a half years now. Many of you have been a part of this place for decades and know exactly what I'm talking about. Others of you have only been once or twice but I'm willing to bet you also understand this delightful feeling. If you're looking for some warmth these days, please visit us.
Oh, and if you decide to try the hot water thing - please be VERY careful! (I kind of feel like I should put a "don't try this at home" warning on this blog entry, but then again, it is pretty darn cool...) Two tips - use just a little bit of water (like a cup or less) and throw it up and out, to give it time to do its magic before it hits the ground.
